The illustration's on this page are taken from the 1780 book Essai de la Musique Ancienne et Modern, by Jean Benjamin de la Borde. The above picture shows three different sizes of sheng (La Borde uses the spelling "cheng", common in older French texts) and the picture below shows a sheng player in action. Notice the longer "spout-style" mouthpieces that were commonly found on sheng of that time, rather than the short mouthpieces currently common.
